REDUCING HOUSEHOLD WASTE

Shopping wisely: when purchasing groceries or any other products, try to purchase those that come in recyclable containers. Glass jars, or plastic containers that are recyclable in your area are best.

Reducing materialism: We live in a materialistic society, where we tend to purchase too much “stuff”. Replacing older items with newer ones, and filling our closets, attics and basements with junk! Think about whether or not you really need to buy certain items, and try to live a simpler lifestyle. Besides, eliminating clutter helps reduce stress in your life, as well as stress on the environment.

Shopping bins and bags: use bins or cotton shopping bags to reduce the use of plastic bags. These can be found at some grocery stores and health food stores.

RECYCLE! We have improved our recycling habits over the years, and in most places you can find recycling bins full of stacks of newspapers. However, there are still many recyclable items being tossed into the landfill. They take up much needed space, and some contain toxins that can be harmful to the environment. Be mindful when throwing items in the garbage. Is it recyclable? What type of material is it made of- paper, plastic, metal? If it is recyclable then check to see if it is something you can put in your own recycling bin, or something that needs to be taken to a recycling centre. Check your city website, it will tell you what items are recyclable, and locations of drop-off centres. Items such as printer ink cartridges can be taken back to some office supply stores to be recycled. Old computers or other electronics products can also be recycled.

Reuse: containers for storage. Old clothing, furniture, or other household items can be donated if still in good condition. Kids can be creative and make crafts with old items found lying around the house.

Composting: some cities are providing composting bins to households to reduce food waste. Compost can save much waste from going into the landfill, and is an excellent way to fertilize your garden!
