REDUCING WATER POLLUTION
Cleaner soaps and detergents: many detergents contain harmful chemicals that are poured down the drain, go into the sewer system, and end up in our lakes. Buy purchasing “greener” detergents or all natural detergents and soaps (can be found at most health food stores), you can help keep the water cleaner.
Homemade cleaners: making your own household cleaners is safer to your health and can be less expensive. A simple ingredient such as baking soda is an extremely effective abrasive and deodorizer, and can be mixed with vinegar and/or lemon juice, which are great disinfectants to make an all natural cleaner.
Proper disposal of toxic chemicals: paints, automotive cleaners, or any other hazardous products can be taken into recycling and waste centres that will properly dispose of these chemicals. Many people think that it is safe to pour these down the drain because by the time it reaches the lake, it has been treated or diluted, when in fact, many of these chemicals either do not break down to harmless substances, or are actually more harmful when broken down.
