Spreading Wings Butterfly/Meadow Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project

The Spreading Wings Butterfly Project was established in 1999.  The aim of this project is to increase butterfly populations in the Rouge Valley through meadow restoration and habitat enhancement.  Habitat loss and pesticide use are the leading causes of decreases in butterfly populations.  By increasing native plant species such as wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs, and eliminating the use of pesticides, we are creating healthier habitats for wildlife in the rouge Valley.  We have also been encouraging homeowners and local organizations, including schools to undertake pesticide free gardening in the hopes of improving wildlife habitats all across the GTA.

The monarch butterfly Danaus plexippus is emphasized in the SWBP.  It is being threatened, not by birds (they wont eat a monarch due to its foul taste), but rather by man, as we continue our assault on its habitat.
