The Rouge Valley Naturalists have partnered with the Rouge Valley Foundation to create a Lower Rouge Valley Cavity Nester Education Program. There is a decline of cavity nesting birds in the Rouge Watershed, including the nuthatch, chickadee, wren, crested flycatcher and woodpeckers, and of course the Eastern Blue Bird. Our objective is to provide this program as an option to interested educators and their classes, in where participants would be building and installing the boxes. Students would gain hands-on experience and knowledge, and would also be able to visit existing Bill Lewis, Director of Programming for the Rouge Valley Foundation has been documenting the status of cavity nesters in the Rouge Valley through monitoring of installed boxes. The implementation of this program has provided a formalized public monitoring program to allow interested birders and naturalists an opportunity for stewardship and promoters of bird habitats in the Rouge Valley .
