TEACHER'S GUIDE Spreading Wings Butterfly Project Registration By participating in The Spreading Wings Butterfly Project, you will have the opportunity to help restore the meadow by clearing away unwanted invasive plants like the Dog-strangling Vine and planting various native wildflowers that will attract a wide array of animal species! The program begins with a morning of planting wildflowers and shrubs that appeal to butterflies and other wildlife that inhabit the meadow. During the planting, students learn about and observe butterflies in their natural habitat. Students are then taken on a guided hike throughout the Rouge Valley , where they continue to learn and experience the wonders of our environment. A riverside lunch makes for a perfect ending to the day. Students must bring their own lunches and drinks, since there are no concessions on site. We encourage participants to bring “litterless lunches” to reduce the amount of waste produced during their trip. Students are also asked to bring a backpack to carry their lunches and other belongings in during the planting and hiking, since we do not return to the centre until the end of the day . Please ensure that students are properly dressed for outdoor activities- the meadow can be VERY MUDDY in the spring! The program runs through rain or shine so be sure to bring your rain gear if needed. We also encourage parent supervisors to attend and take part in their children's education.
